Natural Gas Comparison / Conversion
We believe that natural gas is the best product we can bring our customers for the most value. However, we always want you to feel you have all the information so you can make an informed decision about how to heat and power your home.
So that the comparison is the same across the board, we’d like to show you what is required to power a standard 30,000 Btu wall heater for an hour. The options we’re comparing are Propane, Electricity and Natural Gas.
Propane
Did you know one gallon of Propane costs approximately $3.00 (local average)? One gallon of Propane contains 92,000 Btu’s, which will operate a 30,000 Btu wall heater for a little more than 3 hours.
This means the cost to operate a 30,000 Btu wall heater using Propane is around $.80 per hour.
Electric Heat
Electricity is measured in kilowatt hours. One kWh costs $.08 and contains 3,413 Btu’s. To operate a 30,000 Btu electric wall heater for three hours would require 26.4 kWh at a cost of $2.11.
That shows us the electric wall heater costs $.70 per hour to operate the same wall heater.
Natural Gas
Natural gas is measured in units called Therms. One Therm of natural gas costs between $.98 and $1.00 (12-month average). The same amount of natural gas contains 100,000 Btu’s.
A Therm of natural gas will operate a 30,000 Btu wall heater for 3.3 hours, which means that natural gas costs only $.28 per hour to operate the heater.
It’s easy to see the difference in price between the three options. If you have any other questions about making the switch to natural gas, please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time. You can call our office at 865-453-3272.
